Texas Tech Hospital supports the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, the only four-year medical school along the US-Mexico border. The school graduated its charter class of 40 new physicians in 2012.

Opened in 1849, Fort Bliss has been in continuous service since the Mexican-American War. Fort Bliss is now primarily known as the home of the 1st Armored Division.
